Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between hiking socks and regular socks?

Hiking socks are usually made from heavier materials than regular socks, like merino wool. This helps protect your feet from debris and blisters. They also typically have extra padding in the heels and toes, which provides additional cushioning and support. In addition, merino wool hiking socks have moisture-wicking properties that help keep your feet dry even when you're sweating. On the other hand, regular socks are often made from lighter materials like cotton, which doesn’t wick away moisture or provide as much padding and protection as hiking socks. If you're planning on doing a lot of hiking in rough terrain, having a sturdy pair of socks designed for hiking will make a significant difference.

Are thicker or thinner socks better for hiking?

Choosing between thick hiking socks and thin hiking socks is a personal choice. Many hikers swear by thick, padded socks that help protect their feet from blisters. However, others find thinner socks to be more comfortable because they allow their feet to “breathe.” At FITS, we offer both thick hiking socks and thin hiking socks, depending on your preference. If you’re not sure which cushioning you prefer, you can opt for a mid-weight hiking sock to start. Regardless of how thick or thin your socks are, make sure they’re constructed with breathable fabric and offer moisture-wicking properties to keep your feet odor and sweat-free throughout your hike.

How tight should hiking socks be?

A good pair of socks is one of the most important hiking gear items. But how do you know if your socks are too tight or too loose? Ideally, your hiking socks should be snug but not constricting. They should provide enough support to prevent blisters and chafing, but they shouldn't be so tight that they cut off circulation. If you're unsure whether your socks are the right size, try doing a "pinch test." Take a pinch of fabric from the top of the sock, and try to stretch it out. If you can stretch the fabric more than an inch or so, the socks are likely too big. Conversely, if you can't stretch the fabric at all, the socks are likely too tight. If you’re not sure what size hiking socks you need, use our FITS sock size chart to find your perfect size for the perfect fit.
